I had the pleasure of working with the fantastic people at Feld for their Nuclear Cowboyz tour. The assignment was to visit the performers (mostly freestyle motorcross athletes) in their homes to capture them in candid moments rarely seen. These guys have personas that precede them when they walk into a room. Tattoos, swagger and bravado to match. However, while in their own homes, most are soft-spoken, kind, family oriented and in the case of one Ronnie Faisst, deeply religious. It's strange but despite being surrounded by the trappings of their success, each of them without fail seemed to display a certain uneasiness. Whether it was the camera or something to do with the strangers in their house, I can't be sure. For certain though, the stunts these guys perform take a mountain of bravery with a healthy serving of madness. It was heartbreaking to find out that just five days after visiting Jim McNeil in Phoenix, he would lose his life while practicing a jump just prior to a performance.

Sadly this weekend professional off-road racer Rick Huseman passed away in a plane crash. I've had the pleasure of spending time with Rick both on and off the track during the years of his meteoric rise to champion status. Just a week ago Friday would be the last time I would see Rick when we did some pictures for Dirtsports Magazine. My thoughts are with his family who are also mourning the loss of his brother Jeff and their pilot who all perished in the crash.

Another trip to Morocco was requested to prepare for the Dakar rally in January. More images (and video) were produced for our client to be used for press and marketing efforts. A very short amount of time on the ground considering the 30+ hours required to travel to this outpost in the Sahara desert, but worth every minute as the scenery is epic. I can't reveal any images of the actual subject matter I was shooting so here is some other stuff...

Observations from Hong Kong

I'm still trying to shake the jet lag from a project that took me around the planet to the cities of New York, London and Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is an impossibly damp and vertical city as much a part of China as it is an island. Brand new modern high rise buildings of brushed metal and glass are stuffed inches from crumbling concrete monoliths with damp laundry hanging from every open windows for forty stories. In this financial hub of Asia there is shopping everywhere. For the nuveau riche there is Gucci, Prada and YSL stores nearly as numerous as the Starbucks, 7-11, and Pret a Manger's. Thankfully cheap chinese trinkets are also readily available in one of the many narrow street markets that dot the central part of Hong Kong and Kowloon. Ex-pats from every corner of the earth work in offices of financial giants by day and swarm the bars and restaurants at night. Noodles are delicious, noodles with sliced barbecued pork or duck on top are even better. With a population density greater than NYC it is amazing how clean the streets and public areas are. Mass transit is king and the trains and buses swoop the hoards of people effortlessly above and below the city. It was a long way to travel with not a lot of free time to explore so I wait patiently for a chance to return... B.

I've just returned from a shoot in the north African country of Morocco. Our mission was to capture images of the Monster Energy BMW X-Raid rally team while they performed a test in preparation for the Silk Way rally in July. We shot portraits of the team as well as action shots of the race cars from both the ground and the air via a Moroccan military supplied helicopter. What an epic place to shoot and a pleasure to work with the X-Raid guys and gals. Big thanks to Monster Joe and BlueC for having me on board for this one. Most of the work will be used in Europe so I'll share the finished ads when I can.

Blowing a tranny...

Yeah, yeah I've heard all the jokes in response to the above statement, but what happened was no joke and it ended our run down the Baja peninsula. This year's rally started out with baking temperatures hovering in the triple digits from the second the flag dropped in Mexicali. Our first day was a near perfect run of three stages that saw half the field get lost in stage one across the mirage-filled Laguna Salada dry lake but our superior navigation skills allowed us to finish ahead of many competitors. A steady pace for the other two stages of the day put us well up the time sheets as we finished in the Bay of LA that evening. Perhaps a sign of how things were about to turn, was when we noticed we had been given a room number of 13 at our hotel that evening. Day two started out just fine as we started the stage just outside town and settled into a slower than hoped for pace due to the brutally rough road and hot temperatures. Well lucky 13 bit us in the under carriage when all of a sudden our engine and transmission temps began to climb about 30 miles into the 127 mile stage. After pulling over to let things cool off we realized it was too late for the transmission when I pulled the dipstick and smelled that awful burnt stench and noticed the brown color. After trying to drive 100 yards, she slipped in all gears and then lost reverse and third, we were going nowhere. Break out the sat-phone and call the crew (now at least 120 miles away) we were gonna need the trailer. After not being able to reach them directly it was a call to the states that helped relay our predicament. In the end we determined limping the broken Bronco backwards on the course at 10mph would be better than trying to get a trailer in, and that is what we were able to do. Hours later at a local yonke (junk yard) we attempted to fix the C4 trans by draining, flushing and cursing, but nothing was going to get the well done gearbox going again, our race was over.
Half the crew went back north and the rest of us continued south and turned our efforts into helping other teams with chasing and pit stops (drinking beer). Oh well we will be back next year.

New Work

It’s been a busy few months around here and thought I’d share some of the things I’ve been up to.

Recent projects have included Goodyear tire ads, portraits of X-games athletes for Monster energy, traveling on a RedBull tour bus with the BC 1 dancers, shooting in the mud and on the track for Maxxis Tire and making a extraordinary machine look extraordinary for Torchmate. Next month should be interesting also as I head to North Africa to shoot a project for a certain well-known team involved in rally raid racing.

One interesting facet of these jobs included making 20 tons of fake snow for the Goodyear ad shown below.

The week we were shooting in November there hadn’t been any significant snowfall in our area and it was determined that our best bet was to fake it! This was accomplished by a special effects company we hired that used a machine to grind huge blocks of ice into a tube, which was then blown out onto the set. In the end we used two moving trucks worth of snow to get the one shot. We also used air-powered "mortars" to blow snow up into the wheel wells of the truck to add to the action of the shot. The end result is a realistic looking mountain environment created by combining a stock image of snowy trees behind the action shot of our hero truck busting through our fake “snow” bank.

Once again we head south for an epic adventure, the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally. We made many changes to our race vehicle this year including a completely new roll cage, FOX racing shocks and a 32 gallon fuel cell. Some quick plugs for the key people contributing to our program this year:

Jon, James, and Skylar at RDM Offroad for the amazing fab and prep.
Brian Godfrey at FOX Shox for hooking us up with with some killer shocks.
The one and only Tommy Morris who tuned our shock valving making our Bronco handle like a sports car (he was the guy behind some guy named Ivan Stewart and more recently Roger Norman).

The 12 hours of Sebring

Every sport has it's premiere event and in the world of sports car racing there are two, the 24 hours of Le Mans in Europe and the 12 hours of Sebring here in America. With several days of support races, qualifying and practice sessions that lead up to the main event on Saturday, thousands annually make the trip to central Florida to camp around the track for days of ear drum busting automobile racing. Because free camping is on a first come basis, some come as much as a month in advance to get the best spot and set up elaborate party headquarters with stages and bars. In contrast to these hard core campers within the infield’s “green park” free areas, there are pay campsites occupied by massive coaches that have the closest views of the racing. Not many motor racing venues can get you closer than a Sebring trackside campsite which are mere feet from the track and in some cases have only a small waist high fence separating the racing from the revelry. The biggest decision as a spectator might be whether to view the racing in front of you, or to turn around and watch the constant flow of inebriated fans that circle the venue cruising in custom designed vehicles and costumes. The party lasts all week, day and night, with the culmination being the 12 hour endurance race on Saturday that races into the darkness. This was my first time to Sebring, but I think it is a tradition that I may join for years to come.

Just as summer succumbed to fall, the booming machine known as the holidays now revs it's engines and the last activities of the year 2010 are playing out. It was an unremarkable year in some respects, but also produced some great memories, so it is with a bittersweet taste that I say goodbye to 2010, and say hello to twenty eleven. To commemorate this I've posted below some exciting and inspirational designs that will race in the coming year and hope that they are a sign of (good) things to come...

After two embarassing first days (Inaccurate fuel mileage estimates, ignition coil melt-down, and the entire front clip breaking off at the mounts to the frame) we managed to get our act together on the third day and ran flawless for two tough specials followed by the finish line in La Paz which was even sweeter than we had imagined. Our goal from the beginning was to finish the rally, just finish and then drive the next day to lands end in Cabo San Lucas. So in the end we met our goal, but also learned a hell of a lot about our vehicle, rallying, desert racing in Baja, and overcoming obstacles. So what was supposed to be a one-off event for us has now grown into a full on addiction as we are already applying what we learned in preparation for next year... or perhaps earlier than that...?

The "DIABLO CABALLO" and the Mexican 1000

Well it's been six months since the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally was postponed due to hurricane damage in Baja California back in September of '09. In that six months we've managed to get next to nothing done on our 1968 Ford Bronco in preparation for the event. As the days click off and we get closer to the new date of April 27th, we are scrambling to check projects off our list. Currently I'm waiting for header flanges for our Ford 351C "M" heads to be laser cut and sent to the header guys so they can assemble our new pipes. With those done we will be able to fit up the beautiful stainless Magnaflow gear into the tight quarters between the frame rails. Then the whole exhaust system will be removed and sent out to be ceramic coated to contain all that heat and further protect from corrosion. Next order of business will be the new power steering system provided by PSC motorsports, which I can already tell is going to take some time and fabrication to install. The last thing before proper testing ensues is the electronics package consisting of a long range VHF radio, driver/navigator intercom, and GPS unit. Along with all this there are numerous details to attend to both on the Bronco and in the logistics involving our team, lodging, chase vehicles, pit equipment, trailer prep, t-shirt printing......... yikes.

After some 7600 kilometers on and off road in Argentina and Chile, we are back in Buenos Aires. Tomorrow we’ll watch the podium ceremony with the thousands of locals that will line the streets. A bit road weary, bug bitten and dusty around the ears, we have gone a long way without incident thanks in large part to Darren’s safe driving. I’ll probably spend close to a week straight going through the 13,657 images I shot (190 gigabytes of stored photos!) and editing them down to my favorites. I also have loads of HD video shot with my new D3S that I’ll have to share some how.
I guess it’s time to crack some of the wine we’ve collected.

Having left Copiapo later than planned due to some badly needed truck maintenence, the 4 hour drive to the bivoauc in La Serena would get us in after dinner. We would have to stop for food somewhere. Looking on the map we thought we might have found our spot.

Vallenar is a town or perhaps more a village, of colonial heritage that if not for the omnipresent grafitti and cellphone shops, could be mistaken for a place stuck in time. Set up on tall fort-like walls bisected by a lush green river bed, it was quite different from the dusty grit of the Atacama Desert. Our meal was a fresh and tasty tapas style dinner served up in a bar occupying a space which was obviously an old house. The floors creaked but the stereo blasted modern rock and hip hop spun by Chilean hipsters working behind the bar.

After dinner we headed downstairs to the street and the big truck parked on the narrow avenue. A crowd of locals had gathered to gawk at our ride and take pictures with their cell phones. They wanted to pose with us, they wanted to try and talk to us, bost most unsual they wanted to give us things. It started with a group of goth kids giving me an unopened can of warm beer . Then a man presented us with a worn sign which read "Hielo La Piramide Del Sur".

So apparently he owned this business and wanted us to take this sign on our journey... wait a second... hielo means "ice" in spanish... we need ice! He refused our money and gave us two bags and then insisted we follow him down the street to his store so he could give us a bottle of local booze called pisco which is made from distilled grapes. As it turned out this man owned a liquor store and gave us a couple of bottles with explicit instructions on when and how to consume them. After many thanks and photographs with him and his entire family we were on our way, thankful we left our planned route and stumbled into Vallenar.

This is Andy.
Andy stopped us on the highway in the Atacama desert... the driest desert on earth, and needed water. He is from Minnesota and rode his bike all the way here from his house... dude is nuts!

Yesterday the Dakar traveling horsepower circus left Argentina for Chile. Our route took us over the Andes mountains to a maximum elevation of 15,500 ft. A surreal liaison with scenes straight from another planet. Difficult to breathe and at times tough to concentrate on anything for more than short periods of time.
We are starting to get into a rhythm of navigating our way through the day using a variety of roadbooks and maps to find our way out to the special section followed by making camp, eating and a little sleep. Wake up at dawn, break camp and repeat. As I write this we have just seen our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean where the infamous Atacama desert meets it.
By the way Robby took the stage win yesterday... America, Fuck yeah!

I awoke this morning in my tent to thunder and rain, guess we should have put the rain fly on last night. Today is a 675 kilometer long stage (liason and special) from Cordoba to La Rioja. The bikes have been leaving the bivouac in the wet weather with their heads hung low. I wouldn't want be one of them today. I'm hoping to post some photos later if we find a gas station with free wi-fi.

Home from Mexico. Watched the race. Saw the winner cross the finish. Ate some tacos and drank some suds. The Kawasaki posters and banners we shot were up all over Ensenada, and then they weren't, they got taken by people because they looked bitchen, nice work BlueC... Kawasaki came in second overall and lost the whole enchilada by less than 3 minutes! Found unauthorized photo-usage in several places including the sweatshirt I'm currently wearing that has one of the studio images I shot of Parnelli's Big-Oly Bronco. Oh well, there is no translation for copyright in Spanish. Flattering I guess. 5:45 pm and the street below my hotel is blaring with race cars moving about mixed with sirens and obnoxious local DJ stages. The daylong circus will go late into the night while some racers finish last minute preparations the locals will surely be having self-lubrication rituals. Baja 1000

It's already mid-November and that means one thing... My birthday!
Although that is true it also means that the Baja 1000 is about to happen. This year's race is again a "loop" race as opposed to "point to point" which is the traditional 900+ mile trek from one end of the baja peninsula to the other. The loop starts and ends in the northern coastal town of Ensenada making a nearly 700 mile figure eight from Pacific Ocean to Sea of Cortez and back. I will be joining the horsepower circus next week and will try to make a post or two while down there. All have chosen to ride the Kawasaki KX450F motorcycles as the brand makes its return to SCORE Baja 1000 competition.
